African marigold and buchu give the opening something specific, a floral note with a faint anise-green character you don't find anywhere else. Bergamot keeps it from being strange. Violet and cyclamen in the heart have an almost dusty quality, then vetiver moves in from the base, earthy and resinous, and the whole composition locks together into something warm and a little smoky. It gets more interesting on skin as it dries down.
