De Los Santos opens with sage and mirabelle, the herbal-aromatic and the delicate plum-fruit in a combination that Ben Gorham uses to evoke the marigold and copal offerings of Dia de los Muertos. Orris root in the heart adds a cool, earthy-iris quality that cistus incanus deepens toward something resinous. Olibanum in the base brings a frankincense warmth that the sage opening has been moving toward, ambroxan and musk giving the drydown a luminous, skin-close softness that extends the whole composition long past its quiet opening.

Why We Carry This

Ben Gorham built Byredo on the premise that fragrance can carry memory and cultural reference without illustration. De Los Santos does that with the sage-olibanum arc, the marigold offering translated into resinous smoke and cool iris. The ambroxan drydown gives the commemorative composition a warmth that honors its subject.
