Matsukita
Matsukita is Clive Christian's study in Japanese materiality: yuzu opens with the specific tart-citrus quality that makes it completely distinct from European lemon or bergamot, and hinoki wood arrives immediately to ground the opening in something unmistakably of a place. Green tea and iris in the heart build a cool, almost austere middle, and the cypress-vetiver-oakmoss base has the damp forest quality that Japanese cedar baths are built to evoke. Precise, meditative, and very far from the house's more voluptuous releases.
Why We Carry This
Matsukita demonstrates the range of what Clive Christian can do when restraint is the brief. The hinoki-cypress accord is built around specific Japanese wood materials, and the green tea heart gives the composition a clarity that the house's richer florals never attempt. A completely different register from the rest of the line.
