Guerlain created the Eau de Cologne Imperiale in 1853 for the Empress Eugenie, and the house has been making it since. Bergamot, lemon, and lemon verbena open with the kind of clean citrus brightness that only exists in the cologne format: radiant, immediate, and complete. Neroli and orange give the heart a floral-citrus warmth that rosemary keeps from becoming too sweet. Cedar and tonka bean in the base provide a framework that holds the cologne's lightness in place longer than the concentration would suggest. One hundred and seventy years of continuous production. The argument has been settled.

Why We Carry This

The Imperiale is the historical benchmark against which every classical cologne is measured. Guerlain's version has been made since 1853 without significant alteration, and the lemon verbena-neroli-rosemary accord is a compositional construction that few contemporary versions of the form have improved on. We carry it because it is the original.
