The most discussed fragrance of the last fifteen years gets discussed for a reason. Voelkl built Santal 33 around a specific tension: the smokiness of Australian sandalwood and cedarwood against the clean, powdery violet and iris in the opening. Ambrox gives the composition its diffusive quality, that almost atmospheric presence that made Santal 33 recognizable on strangers across rooms before people could name it. The leather note in the heart is dry and warm, not heavy. The papyrus base gives the drydown a papery, slightly dusty quality that holds the composition at skin temperature for many hours.
