Leather and oud together ask a question about which material leads, and Montale's answer here is that the leather does. The opening is saffron and cardamom against bergamot, the spice register establishing itself before the leather heart takes over with the oud threaded through it rather than beside it. Iris gives the mid-stage an unexpected powdery quality that softens the leather without neutralizing it. Vetiver in the base adds a dry, rooty depth to the sandalwood-amber foundation, making the drydown feel like the inside of a very good case.
