Black Musk is Montale building an entire composition around a single material's darker register. The opening is immediate musk: warm, slightly animalic, and close to skin from the first moment. Amber and benzoin deepen the accord in the heart, giving the musk a resinous warmth, and vanilla softens the composition without making it gourmand. Patchouli and sandalwood in the base provide an earthy, woody framework that extends the musk-amber accord through a lasting drydown. This is what 'black' means in a musk composition.
