The rum absolute in the opening of Velvet Orchid is the note that makes everything else possible: it gives bergamot and mandarin a warmth and richness that honey amplifies without turning sweet. In the heart, the orchid accord is built from narcissus, heliotrope, and rose working together, none of them individually quite orchid but collectively unmistakable. Suede and myrrh in the base give the finish a velvety texture that peru balsam and vanilla extend into a drydown that stays close and warm for hours.

Velvet Orchid represents what happens when Vasnier builds a floral around an accord rather than a single note. The orchid-narcissus-heliotrope combination in the heart is more technically interesting than it appears on the notes list, and the rum-suede-myrrh arc gives it a richness that its Black Orchid lineage implies but that this version actually delivers.
