Neroli and vetiver should not share the same fragrance in most hands. The first is delicate and floral, cold and bright in the way that only distilled orange blossom petals can be; the second is earthy, rooty, and capable of anchoring any composition in darkness. Thierry Wasser resolves the contrast by keeping each material in its proper register: neroli and orange blossom handle the opening and heart, then vetiver carries the drydown, the cedarwood-sandalwood base mediating between the two poles. The result is unusual and coherent.

The neroli-to-vetiver arc is a genuine compositional gamble, and Thierry Wasser's resolution of it demonstrates why Guerlain's master perfumer is one of the few people who could make it work.
