Samsara, launched in 1989, remains one of Jean-Paul Guerlain's most complete constructions. Bergamot and ylang-ylang open with a warmth that rose and iris then deepen in the heart, the floral accord rich and multilayered in a way that requires genuine material quality to sustain. Sandalwood is the composition's backbone: present from the opening and dominant in the base, it gives the jasmine and tonka bean close a warmth that the amber amplifies. Three decades of continuous production have not made this composition feel dated. It has simply become a reference point.

Jean-Paul Guerlain built Samsara around Mysore sandalwood at a concentration that the contemporary fragrance market would consider extravagant, and the result was a composition that defined oriental femininity for a decade. The jasmine-sandalwood accord is one of perfumery's canonical constructions, and Samsara remains its most studied example.
