Cumin in a rose fragrance is a provocation, and that is the point. Bugey uses it in the opening of Rose 31 alongside coriander to give the rose an earthy, skin-warm quality that prevents it from reading as a flower. The rose runs from top to heart, but it is transformed at each stage: sharper in the opening, softer against cedar and guaiac wood in the heart, then receding into musk and vetiver in the base where olibanum adds a faint smoky resin. The 31 refers to the number of ingredients. None of them are wasted.

Rose 31 opened Le Labo's catalog and set the house's argument about what rose perfumery could do if it stopped treating the flower as the whole story. The cumin-coriander frame is the compositional move that gives this fragrance its character, and Bugey has not needed to revise it in twenty years. The vetiver-olibanum base holds across a full day.
