Blanche Bete translates as White Beast, and the contrast is built into the composition. The surface, aldehydes and white musk in the opening, is luminous and clean. Iris and muguet in the heart are quiet and powdery, violet and rose softening the arrangement further. But ambrette in the base carries a warm, almost animalic quality that surfaces gradually in the drydown, the beast below the white. Vetiver gives the cedarwood base an earthiness that keeps the musk from reading as simple cleanliness. Frossard's contradiction is precise.
