Intense Café
Coffee appears in both the opening and the heart of Intense Cafe, a structural choice that commits the composition to its central material without apology. The first coffee, with bergamot and cardamom, is bright and slightly roasted. The second, against rose and jasmine in the heart, takes on a warmer, richer character as the florals soften its edge. Patchouli and amber in the base give the drydown an earthiness that prevents the vanilla from becoming saccharine. The effect is closer to a coffee macchiato than a coffee cake.
Why We Carry This
Coffee as a primary fragrance note requires skill to prevent from turning acrid or synthetic. Montale keeps it coherent across both the opening and heart by surrounding it with materials that complement rather than compete, and the patchouli base gives the whole thing a seriousness the name alone does not promise.
