Rum and grapes in the opening of Cruz del Sur I read as fermented, almost boozy, a quality that dried fruits and cumin in the heart push further into warm, intoxicating territory. Cloves and cinnamon give the spice backbone structure, cedar threading through as the bridge to the base. Castoreum and leather arrive in the base with incense and labdanum, a combination that is heavy and persistent in the best sense: resinous, smoky, and built to last. This is the darker of the two Cruz del Sur expressions and the more demanding one.
